Student Perspective: SAILING ON THE MARTHA
by Sophie Kunka

“Blue Thunderbird to your port side!” calls the bow watch on one of many Friday-night Spring Whitecap Series races upon the Martha, an 84-foot long, 110 year-old schooner.
The schooner takes students from the OCEAN program in Port Townsend to race in the Whitecap races every Friday night during April and May. Most of these spring races have been held in calm weather, except the first one, which was canceled because of a blustery forecast. As well as those races, OCEAN students participated in the Smith Island race on April 3 and a Protection Island race on April 29.
“This is the third year that we have been sailing with OCEAN students,” says the schooner’s captain, Robert d’Arcy. The Schooner Martha Foundation and the d’Arcy family decided to give OCEAN students the opportunity to sail on this impressive schooner, “to offer young students an opportunity to get out on the water and experience racing and voyaging.” continued Captain d’Arcy.
OCEAN students in the program really enjoy sailing this fantastic ship. “It’s amazing racing on a boat like Martha,” says Maeve Kenney, a student sailing in the Spring Whitecap Series races. Sailing on the Martha is one of the best opportunities that OCEAN offers. Student Zia Magill says that sailing on Martha, “is very fun and I learn a lot.” Hazel Windstorm, another student, observed, “I think she is a really beautiful boat with a lot of sail.”
Some OCEAN students have even gone on to train to be deck hands and crew on the Martha. “OCEAN as a school class is relatively new, we have had other alternative and regular school students become crew and go on to become professional sailors and work in the marine trades. Our foredeck leader, Anne Aldrich, started sailing with us when she was 13. Along with Mary [d’Arcy], Lia Poore has been sailing with us for several years and is training to become a deck hand. Gabe Hefley and Anna Molotsky have been sailing with us for a few years. We hope that anyone who really wants to become part of our crew will commit to sailing with us more and learn while having fun,” Captain d’Arcy.
Part of what makes this experience so amazing is the astounding history in Martha’s very sails. The Martha was originally built in San Francisco in 1907 for the San Francisco Yacht Club commodore J. R. Hanify and named after his wife, Martha Fitzmaurance Hanify. When Captain d’Arcy was asked what the longest trip Martha has been on (although without OCEAN students) he said it was “down the coast to SanFrancisco, Monterey Bay, Moro Bay, Channel Islands, San Diego, Baja Mexico to Cabo San Lucas, Cabo to La Paz, LaPaz back to Cabo, Cabo to San Diego, San Diego to San Francisco, SanFrancisco to Long Beach, Long Beach to Oahu, Hawaii in “Transpac” (an ocean race), Oahu to Hanalei Bay Kauai, Kauai to Victoria BC and home. We were away for 1 year and two weeks.”
According to Captain d’Arcy, no one owns Martha. She is her very own free self, and unencumbered by being owned by anyone.
“I really didn’t decide to get Martha, she decided to get me! Martha needed someone to take care of her and help her start a sail training program. So, Martha really is her own gal, nobody owns her but herself with the Schooner Martha Foundation,” said Captain d’Arcy.
