HISTORIC PRESERVATION / MARITIME CULTURE and the WASHINGTON STATE HISTORIC SOCIETY

The Schooner Martha Foundation celebrates two areas of human endeavor.

The first is curating and preserving the history of the sailing vessel Martha.  The second is providing access to youth for sail training and marine education.
Together these two facets provide an unusual opportunity for you to take part in the maritime culture that has such an important role in our past and, hopefully, our future.
The Maritime Culture shares and embodies many traditional values that most of us would agree are an important part of our community. Authenticity, honesty, leadership and teamwork are values that traditional seafaring teaches and demands of it’s students.
Martha and her programs embody and instruct these values everyday in the intersection of art and science that is an integral part of traditional vessels,  their construction, sailing, handling and  maintenance.
Historic preservation provides the stewardship  and guardianship of the art and science that manifests itself in many of the historic buildings, sailing vessels and related activities within our community. The successful preservation of this legacy depends on  the support of small community based nonprofits , museums and the public.
Fortunately, we in Washington State have the
Washington State Historical Society to guide and assist organizations that are in the business of  historic property preservation and management. This office administers a grant called the Washington State Heritage Capital Project Fund. Martha applied for and was awarded a first place ranking making the current restoration project possible.
If you enjoy visiting historic properties, taking your children and grandchildren to a museum or a historic vessel,
remember to thank the Washington State Historical Society as well as your state Legislators for their work in your behalf.
